We are pleased to announce that Singularity Academy's new book "Mental Health, Psychiatric Disorders, and the Implications of Long Covid-19", written by Prof. Ying Zhang, was published globally in digital and in print on Oct 1. 2022 (ISBN: 978-3-033-09459-8 (print) 978-3-033-09460-4 (digital)). This book presents an alternative medical treatment, traditional Chinese medicine (including acupuncture and herbal medicine), in effectively (in terms of economic cost and treatment performance) dealing with psychiatric disorders and the consequences on the mental health of long Covid-19.
Our Singularity's medical expert, Professor Dr. Berner, a professor of Psychiatry at Freiburg University, Germany, commented: "Dr. Ying Zhang's book is a compelling read for both the practitioner in TCM who likes to expand his knowledge on western medicine but much more for the practitioner in western medicine who likes to catch up with the growing interest in TCM in her/his community. One might find that some of the "new" ideas in western medicine, for instance, brain-gut interference or mindfulness, have been incorporated into medical practice elsewhere for quite a while. A stimulating journey through traditional Chinese medicine and western medicine and back again that I can wholeheartedly recommend for reading."
This book illustrates the theoretical foundation of TCM and its view of psychiatric disorders. It discusses the mechanism of TCM in healing people (rather than just treating people) by using the universe's wisdom (Yin and Yang) to provoke human's capacity to heal themselves and the TCM's principles regarding diagnosis and treatment (i.e., acupuncture and herbal medicine), as well as its applications in the period of long COVID-19. In addition, this book presents the effectiveness and pharmaceutical mechanism of herbal medicine and acupuncture using the latest western medicine research. With the rising number of psychiatric disorders in the world, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, this book, taking the view of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) into account, would benefit not only the healthcare system as a whole (in terms of cost-effectiveness) but also each individual's health (in terms of healing-effectiveness).
Prof. dr. Michael Berner, a Psychiatrist and a professor of Psychiatry in Germany, continued: "Dr. Ying Zhang undertakes a highly thought-provoking task. In her concise and readable compendium, she summarizes the principles of traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) with special regard to mental health and certain aspects of the Covid-19 pandemics. She then focuses on the aspects and diagnoses of Western Medicine (WM). Well found in the medical literature, she bridges TCM and WM and points toward future developments for WM."
Doctor-medic Günther Mild, a specialist in psychiatry and psychotherapy, the Chief Physician of Verus Bonifatius Clinic in Bad Salzschlirf in Germany, said: "For me, it is very important that western medicine thinks out of the box and recognizes ancient traditional treatments based on research, such as Qi Gong, acupuncture, and Chinese herbal therapy. I recommend this book to colleagues as an introduction to the principles of traditional Chinese medicine in the complex and multimodal treatment of selected psychiatric disorders. This is especially important with the psychiatric complications of long covid, a disease we will often encounter shortly in outpatient and inpatient treatment."
Kristel Baele, the Chair of the Dutch National Council for Culture, said, "This book has successfully juxtaposed the treatments in traditional Chinese and Western medicine clearly and appealingly, making a powerful plea for cooperation."
Prof. dr. Shuhuai He, a former professor of TCM at Beijing University of Chinese Medicine with 60 years of teaching and practice in Chinese medicine, commented: "Dr. Ying Zhang is one of those who embrace both Chinese and Western medical knowledge. Her book, combining Chinese and Western medicine knowledge with a clear structure and rich content publication, will greatly help medical peers and broaden their thinking in diagnosis and treatment."
Prof. dr. Tiejun Tang, a professor of Chinese medicine in both Europe and China, with nearly 40 years of experience in teaching and researching Chinese medicine, the Chairman of the Chinese Medicine Alliance U.K.(CMA), said, "Dr. Ying Zhang, in her book, comprehensively analyzed many common clinical diseases in mental health from the fundamental theories of traditional Chinese medicine, Western medicine, and psychology. Traditional Chinese medicine treatment methods include acupuncture, herbal medicine, qigong, and tai chi. The current scientific evidence of these therapies is also discussed. This book is comprehensive in content, detailed in analysis, well organized, and with clear logic and sufficient evidence. It is a practical book for both medical practitioners and Covid patients."
Prof. dr. Feng Zhu, a professor of Business Administration from Harvard University, said: "Prof. dr. Ying Zhang's new book on treating psychiatric disorders using traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) sheds light on the importance of cross-disciplinary studies and practice. This work will open your eyes by showing the possible mechanism of traditional Chinese medicine in helping with Long Covid and why TCM could effectively treat mental diseases in terms of cost and performance. This work is significant to patients, doctors, policymakers, and healthcare managers".
Dr. Urs Lustenberger, our legal expert at Singularity Academy, commented, "Prof. Zhang shows that TCM has valid and comparably cost-effective alternative treatment methods in areas where western approaches are not as mature as one would have hoped. I have learned from this work that body and mind are inseparably intertwined; similarly, any modern treatment approach is inseparable from the wealth of historical knowledge accumulated over thousands of years."
Prof. Ying Zhang, the author of this book, said: "I sincerely hope this book will shed a little light on clinical psychology development, and I hope this work will facilitate both sides (WM and TCM) in gaining insight from each other to benefit the core of humanity."
